| BUYERS BEWARE ON FOREIGN PROPERTY Local Euro MP Brian Simpson would like all tour operators and
airlines to warn their clients about buying property abroad, without going through the proper channels. With the holiday season about to start, the Labour MEP is concerned that UK
citizens fly off to the sun, decides to buy property and then are left with problems on their hands. “We have a number of ongoing cases where
people have bought property, particularly in Spain and Eastern Europe and now find themselves either out of pocket, or facing compulsory purchase orders, or not even owning the land that their
property is built on! Every year we get these problems” said Mr Simpson. Mr Simpson would like Tour operators to help by
issuing a ‘buyer beware’ leaflet, when airline tickets are sent out to every passenger, warning them of the dangers that exist in buying property abroad, without detailed checks. “It never ceases to amaze me that when buying a property in Britain, people dont do proper checks, use accredited estate agents and seek legal
advice. Yet, when buying property abroad many people do little or no checks, particularly in the area of Health and Social Service provision.” Commented Mr
Simpson. Whilst not opposed to people buying property abroad, Mr Simpson makes a plea to those considering such a move, to seek professional and
competent advice, not only in the UK, but in the area in which they wish to move and be aware that welfare provision in case of illness or incapacity will have to be paid for privately in many
cases. “It’s about doing it properly, not just on a whim, and if that takes time, so be it. In my view there is
no short way to buying a property abroad and if the deal looks too good to be true, then it usually is. Those who do it properly enjoy their foreign homes. Those
who don’t can end up with a nightmare on their hands” So Buyer Beware! Concluded the Labour MEP Ends
