Local Euro MP
Brian Simpson has criticised the number of regulators for allowing
gas, electric and water prices rise to record levels. Now he wants the Government to
sack the various regulators and replace them with people who will
put the consumer first.
“When the public
utilities were privatised by the Tories we were promised that the
regulators would keep them in check and ensure that the consumers
got a fair deal. That
promise looks at little thin now”, said the Labour
MEP.
Energy prices to
consumers have doubled in recent years and now the Water Companies
are also increasing their costs by 60% in some
cases.
Mr. Simpson
believes that the utility companies are taking advantage of higher
fuel charges to increase the cost to customers more than is
necessary.
“Bills in
Belgium and the rest of Europe have not rocketed like they have in
Britain and yet those providers are buying in the same energy
marketplace. It would
appear that only in Britain have prices gone up at an astronomical
pace. That tells me
two things. Firstly,
the Regulators are not doing their job and secondly, the Private
Utility Company are profiteering. I want the Government to act on
both counts by taxing the profiteers and by sacking the ineffectual
regulators” said Mr. Simpson.
