Euro MP Brian Simpson has called for the drink driving limits to be reduced from 0.8 (80ml) to 0.2 (20ml) in light of recent events in
Gloucestershire. Mr. Simpson, Labour’s Transport
spokesman in the European Parliament has long advocated a reduction in the drink driving limit because he believes more and more people are now taking risks with drink
driving.
“I believe we have a problem both with drinking and driving and people driving under the influence of drugs. I appreciate that it is
a minority who do this, but a car is a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands and people who drive whilst under the influence of either alcohol or drugs are a menace to society and should feel the
full weight of the law” said Mr. Simpson.
Most of Europe has lower limits than Britain, but Britain enforces its driving laws more vigorously. “Within Europe the problem is twofold. Other countries have lower limits with
less enforcement and we have more enforcement but higher limits. The Scandinavians are the only ones in my opinion who have it right on both
counts.” “I believe most people in Britain would
support a lowering of the limit and tougher sentences on those who flout the law” concludedd Mr. Simpson.
