New Local Euro MP Brian Simpson has called for the drink driving limit to be reduced for all drivers not just the under 25's.
Reacting to the suggestion from the Governments own influential advisory council on drugs that the limit should be dropped from 80mg to 50mg for drivers under 25, Mr Simpson said the case for reducing the drink driving limits for all drivers was compelling.
"Britain has a problem with binge drinking and drink driving. We have one of the highest drink driving levels in Europe and I really think in the interest of road safety we need to reduce our level to 50mg".
Mr Simpson's view is backed by the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) and many senior Police Officers.
We believe that by reducing the drink driving limit we could save 65 lives avoid 230 serious injuries each year. Drivers who have between 50mg and 80mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood are two and a half times more likely to be involved in an accident than someone who is sober" Said Mr Simpson.
As yet the Government has no plans to reduce the drink driving limit, relying instead on education and advertising campaigns to warn people of the dangers of drink driving, however Mr Simpson believes the time is now right to re-examine the levels in the light of this report.
