Local Euro MP Brian Simpson has been at the
forefront of a campaign to end the practice of airlines hiding
extra costs from travellers when they book an airline
ticket. Labour’s
transport spokesman in the European Parliament believes that
consumers should be informed what the true costs of a ticket is
right up front instead of only finding out at the end of the
process.
Speaking at the Parliamentary debate in
Strasbourg, Mr. Simpson said, “This is great news for all air
passengers. Now
airlines will not be able to con people with low fares at the
outset only to add a plethora of other charges at the
end. The actual cost
will be shown including all the hidden extras at the
outset. What the
customer sees is what the customer will pay”.
Also contained in the European Parliament’s
report are measures that will force all carriers
·
To provide on the internet
and all other means, comprehensive information on how the total
fare is broken down.
·
Highlight on the ticket the
total costs of security taxes and charges.
·
Have in place proper social
conditions for airline staff when an airline hires in an aircraft
from outside the EU.
·
Abide by stricter rules when
they lease aircraft from outside the EU.
“This report is about ensuring transparency
and fair play for consumers as well as fair play for airline
staff. Now thousands
of people in the North West who book holidays and other flights on
line will not be forced with extra charges levied by airlines,
unless they agree to them” said Mr. Simpson.
