Don’t forget diesel replacements says Euro MP Brian Simpson

Local Euro MP and rail campaigner Brian Simpson has welcomed the decision by the Government to electrify the Liverpool-Earlstown-Manchester railway line by 2014, but has warned that there is still an urgent need to replace old diesel units such as “Pacers” for our commuter and stopping services.

Speaking at the Northern Way Transport Forum, Mr Simpson pointed out that whilst new electric units will be most welcomed there still had to be a balance struck in providing new and replacement diesel stock also.

“The plan to electrify Liverpool to Manchester by 2014 is good news and will frankly; finally give the two cities a fast, efficient service that will benefit the travelling public.  But we must also carry on in our campaign to ensure that the present old diesel fleet that operates on stopping services throughout the North of England is replaced in line with promises made in the past.”  Commented the Labour MEP.

Some 180 replacement vehicles were promised, but this figure is likely to drop in light of the decision to electrify.  Mr Simpson is keen however to ensure that the number does not drop too much to the detriment of commuters who use this kind of service.

“The campaign to replace old diesel units still goes on and I believe that it is right, whilst congratulating the Government on its electrification announcement on the one hand, we still remind them of promises made in regard to the Manchester Rail Hub and the diesel unit replacement on the other” concluded Mr Simpson.
